Diabetic nephropathy in dogs: literature review MV&Z
Martorelli, Cínthia Ribas; Kogika, Márcia Mery; Caragelasco, Douglas Segalla.
Diabetes mellitus caused by insulin deficiency and chronic hyperglycemia usually presents complications including cataract, retinopathy, recurrent infections and ketoacidosis. Chronic hyperglycemia can cause long-term complications such as diabetic nephropathy. In humans, diabetic nephropathy is characterized mainly by glomerular injury and usually it is associated with systemic hypertension. The mechanisms proposed for the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy could be glomerular injury, as well as renal tubular damage. However, there are few studies analyzing the relationship between diabetes mellitus and kidney damage in dogs. The objective of this review is to clarify the pathophysiological mechanisms of diabetic nephropathy and to analyze the available...

Teixeira,Pedro Paulo Maia; Souza,Erica Siqueira; Jark,Paulo César; Coutinho,Leandro Nassar; Silva,Alanna do Socorro Lima da; Guiduce,Marcos Vinicius Sicca; Maria,Bruna Piva; Silva,Paloma Espirito Santo; Semolin,Lívia Maria Souza; Silva,Marco Augusto Machado; Vicente,Wilter Ricardo Russiano; Tinucci-Costa,Mirela; Nardi,Andrigo Barboza De.
Laryngeal and tracheal tumors are rare in pets; some piece of information on their disease behavior, therapy and evolution are limited. Neoplasms in this area are a diagnostic challenge. In many cases, they can be biopsied and excised using endoscopic instruments, but there is no report of this in canines. The goal of this study is to report a successful case of a laryngeal neoplasm removal through endoscopy. A head and neck radiogram revealed a mass in the laryngeal lumen protruding into the trachea. The patient then underwent an endoscopy to confirm the radiographic diagnosis and to surgically remove the tumor. The histopathological diagnosis was poorly differentiated carcinoma. The most appropriate treatment for laryngeal tumors is the resection of the...

Araújo,C.M.T.D.; Pacheco,B.D.; Castro,J.L.C.; Farias,M.R.; Engracia Filho,J.R..
ABSTRACT A female adult dog, with a four-month history of pain and intense pruritus, which eventually resulted in sudden death, was referred for necropsy. Postmortem examination showed thoracic and abdominal serum-sanguineous exudates, multifocal infiltrative renal masses, and similar tumors in the heart. Histopathology revealed midsize infiltrative neoplastic proliferation composed of round cells, sparse cytoplasm, and large hyperchromatic nuclei. Immunohistochemistry revealed CD3+ and CD20-immunoexpression. Histopathological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the diagnosis of epitheliotropic lymphoma with cardiac and renal metastasis.

Experimental approaches to study the nutritional value of food ingredients for dogs and cats R. Bras. Zootec.
Harmon,David L..
This review covers methods that have been applied to study the nutrient value or quality of specific ingredients fed to dogs, cats and comparable species (i.e. foxes, minks, rats, etc.). Typically, the nutritional value or utilization of a specific ingredient is measured by total tract digestibility and has been expanded through the measurement of total nutrient balance (i.e. nitrogen or energy). However, to better understand digestion it is necessary to obtain a more accurate measurement of nutrients entering and leaving the small intestine. Accurate measurement of small intestinal digestion is crucial in dogs and cats because nutrient digestion and absorption occurs primarily in the small intestine. Measuring small intestinal digestibility requires...

Hara, Olgga A; Liao, Min; Baticados, Waren; Bannai, Hiroshi; Zhang, Guohong; Zhang, Sofa; Lee, Eung-goo; Nishikawa, Yoshifumi; Claveria, Florencia G.; Igarashi, Makoto; Nagasawa, Hideyuki; Xuan, Xuenan.
Neospora caninum infection is an important disease affecting bovine and canine populations worldwide. The dense granule antigen 7 of N. caninum (NcGRA7) is considered to be an immunodominant antigen. In the present study, the gene encoding truncated NcGRA7 (NcGRA7t) lacking an N-terminal signal peptide was expressed in Escherichia coli, and its diagnostic potential in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was evaluated. The ELISA could clearly discriminate between known N. caninum-positive and -negative sera from dogs. Serum samples randomly collected from dogs in Japan and China were examined for the diagnosis of neosporosis using the ELISA. Twenty-three of 135 samples (17.03%) and 9 of 95 (9.47%) samples from Japan and China, respectively, were...

Extragonadal malignant teratoma in a dog - case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Pêgas,G.R.A.; Monteiro,L.N.; Cassali,G.D..
ABSTRACT Teratomas are neoplasms thought to arise from germ cells which usually occur within gonads and are rarely described on extragonadal sites. The present study reports a case of a 15 year old female mongrel dog with a lumbosacral tumor. The tumor was microscopically composed of embryonic tissues with areas containing atypical undifferentiated cells, leading to the diagnosis of a malignant teratoma. Malignant teratomas are uncommon tumors in domestic animals.

Extra-Renal Lesion Caused by Dioctophyma renale Eggs in an Erratic Cycle in a Dog International Journal of Morphology
Lemos,Luciana da Silva; Santos,Alessa Siqueira de Oliveira dos; Rodrigues,Ana Bárbara Freitas; Goulart,Maria Laudelina Vieira Seródio; Almeida,Luciano Grillo de; Silveira,Leonardo Serafim da.
A dog with multiple infection by D. renale in the abdominal cavity presented granular peritonitis with giant cells phagocytizing D. renale eggs. Hepatic and phrenic serositis associated to numerous eggs of the parasite immersed in fibrinous process were observed. Lungs presented D. renale eggs in the parenchyma, mononucleated cell infiltrates, edema, hemorrhage, congestion, atelectasia, emphysema, and thromboembolism. D. renale eggs were detected inside the center-lobular veins, auricular cavities, and superficial venous bed of the heart. These findings characterized an atypical dissemination pathway of eggs in erratic cycle.

Follicular Loss of the Cryopreserved Canine Ovary after Xenotransplantation OAK
Ishijima, Takako; Abe, Yasuyuki; Suzuki, Hiroshi; 鈴木, 宏志.
The effect of cryopreservation and subsequent xenotransplantation on the follicular reserve of the canine ovary by using non obese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficient (NOD-SCID) mice was examined. Vitrified-warmed canine ovarian tissues were placed into the ovarian bursa of mice, and then were removed and subjected to histological examination at 4 weeks after the transplantation. Over 30% of primordial follicles and 65% of early primary follicles survived after cryopreservation. However, regardless of breed or age, percentages of survived primordial follicles and early primary follicles after the transplantation ranged from 0-7% and from 0-15%, respectively. These results indicate that the majority of primordial follicles and early primary follicles...

Gene expression of estrogen and oxytocin receptors in the uterus of pregnant and parturient bitches BJMBR
Veiga,G.A.L.; Milazzotto,M.P.; Nichi,M.; Lúcio,C.F.; Silva,L.C.G.; Angrimani,D.S.R.; Vannucchi,C.I..
In the canine species, the precise mechanisms of pregnancy maintenance and the initiation of parturition are not completely understood. The expression of genes encoding the receptors for estrogen (ERα mRNA) and oxytocin (OTR mRNA) was studied in the endometrium and myometrium during pregnancy and parturition in dogs. Real-time PCR was performed to quantify the levels of ERα mRNA and OTR mRNA in the uterus of bitches during early (up to 20 days of gestation), mid (20 to 40 days) and late pregnancy (41 to 60 days), and parturition (first stage of labor). All tissues expressed ERα and OTR mRNA, and are thus possibly able to respond to eventual estrogen and oxytocin hormonal stimuli. No statistically significant differences in the expression of ERα mRNA were...

Glucose and lipid profile of obese dogs fed with different starchy sources Ciência Rural
Feitosa,Mariana Lorenção; Zanini,Surama Freitas; Sousa,Dyeime Ribeiro de; Fantuzzi,Elizabeth; Carraro,Thais Consuelo Loyola; Pinto,Camila Alves; Bertonceli,Raul Monteiro; Colnago,Geraldo Luiz.
ABSTRACT: Among the health disorders caused by obesity in dogs stand out hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. Glycemic responses are directly related to the amount and type of starch. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of different sources of starch on glycemic and lipid levels in obese dogs. These dogs were distributed in a completely randomized design in a factorial 3x2x2 (three sources starchy - corn (60%), sorghum (60%) and corn: sorghum (30:30%), two breeds - Beagle and Dachshund and males and females. After 28 days of experiment, dogs fed with corn had higher amounts of glucose (93.79A mg dL-1) (P<0.05) compared with diets containing sorghum (88.00Bmg dL-1) and corn: sorghum (88.75B mg dL-1) (P>0.05). Thus, dogs that consumed corn had a...
